Frequent Asked Questions
WHAT IS MICROBLADING?
Microblading (also referred to as Semi Permanent Hairstrokes, 3d Brows, Feather Strokes, Micro-strokes) is the process of delicately implanting pigment into the skin with a sterile micro needle to simulate the appearance of natural hair.
Hairstrokes are meant to be a subtle, natural enhancement and to create fuller more beautiful brows.
WHAT ARE SEMI-PERMANENT POWDER BROWS?
This is the process of delicately implanting pigment into the skin with a sterile micro needle to simulate the appearance of beautifully shaped brows. Semi-Permanent Powder brows are meant to enhance and define your brows. The shading method involves the application of thousands of tiny little dots of pigment, inserted into the skin, gradually building up a color and defined shape. This is done with a special grouping of ultra-thin needles and done with diluted pigment. This look is recommended for people who fill in their brows and wear makeup on a daily basis.
HOW LONG DOES MICROBLADING LAST?
Cosmetic tattooing is considered semi-permanent as it does not wash away, however pigments are designed to fade over time. Factors such as skin type, lifestyle, age, metabolism, medications, and pigment color affect the longevity of the tattoo. The sun and some kinds of anti-aging creams that have ingredients such as Retin A, retinols, glycolic acids and lightening properties can affect the rate at which these pigments are broken down. To take care of your brows, follow the aftercare instructions and touch-up your brows every 1-2 years (as needed).
*Please note that final results vary and CANNOT be guaranteed due to the nature of skin as it heals. A follow-up appointment is recommended at 5-8 weeks where we can assess your pigment retention and make any changes necessary. Some clients may require more than one follow-up to reach their desired results at an additional cost. Again, this will depend on aftercare, skin type, etc.
WHAT FACTORS WILL AFFECT MY MICROBLADING?
Oily Skin: Increased oil production can cause hair strokes to blur and heal lighter and powdery.
Smoking: Smokers may notice that their Semi-Permanent Cosmetics will fade faster.
Anemia and iron deficiency: Your body will absorb these iron-based pigments more quickly.
Sun exposure: Increased exposure to the sun will cause premature fading. You will want to use a sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30 to protect against fading and I recommend a powder sunblock that can be reapplied throughout the day while in the sun.
Age and metabolism. The Faster your metabolism the faster the pigment will fade.
Bleeding during the procedure: Excessive bleeding during your procedure will greatly affect how your body retains pigment. While this is not entirely in our control, it is important that you follow before care instructions to help minimize bleeding. This includes avoiding blood thinning medications, and alcohol before your procedure.
Thyroid Conditions: Sometimes this condition causes client to metabolize pigment differently and can cause color issues so make sure to discuss all health issues with your technician ahead of time.
DOES MICROBLADING HURT?
Topical anesthetics are used to make you comfortable during your procedure, however pain tolerance varies from client to client. Most of my topicals contain a 5% lidocaine such as Zenza. Sometimes a secondary numbing will be used that contains Tetracaine and Benzocaine. Please let me know if you have allergies to any of these. Having the procedure during your menstrual cycle may increase your sensitivity.
IS MICROBLADING RIGHT FOR ME?
Microblading heals best on normal to dry skin types. Hair strokes may not work well on clients with very oily skin, large pores or previous permanent cosmetics tattoos. On those with oily skin types and larger pores, results may appear softer and powdery.
Microblading is designed to blend with your natural brow hair, the more hair you have the more realistic results will appear. If you have very little or sparse eyebrow hair results will appear flatter, and it is possible that you may need more than two sessions to achieve your desired result.
Microblading is not meant to entirely replace makeup. Eyebrow pencils and powders may still be needed.
You cannot receive hair stroke brows if you are:
• Pregnant or nursing
• Are currently using Accutane or have used Accutane within the past year
• Have a freshly tanned/sunburned face
• Are on blood thinning medications or antibiotics
• Have Rosacea
• Are currently undergoing cancer treatment
• Prone to Keloid scars
ARE SEMI-PERMANENT POWDER BROWS RIGHT FOR ME?
Powder Brows are beautiful on ALL skin types! If you have rosacea or very red skin tones your results will be much better with the “Powder Brow” Technique.
You cannot receive Powder Brows if you are:
• Pregnant or nursing
• Are currently using Accutane or have used it in the last 3 months
• Are currently undergoing cancer treatment
• Have a sunburned face
Powder Brows are designed to look like soft powdery makeup. This can replace makeup but will still look natural. Some clients will add a touch of makeup if they want a “bold brow”.
HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY APPOINTMENT?
If you have reference pictures, please feel free to bring these to your appointment. Along with the pencil or powder you are currently using.
If you tint your brows you will want to do so 72 hours before your appointment.
If you prefer to have your eyebrows waxed/threaded please do so at least 3-4 days before your appointment, otherwise we can remove stray hairs when we design your brows.
Shower and wash your face the day of your appointment. Please come makeup free. (Mascara is ok)
You must not use Retin-A near the brow area 2 weeks before or after the procedure. The use of Retinoils/Retin A/Glycolics will also affect the longevity of your pigment so applying it at least an inch away from the brows is recommended.
You will need to avoid pools, lakes, salt water and extreme sun exposure for at least two weeks following your appointment, so make vacation plans accordingly!
No Botox, fillers, Microdermabrasion, chemical peels or anything of the like for at least 2 weeks prior to your procedure.
Doing any of the following will cause excessive bleeding during your procedure and will hinder your final result!:
• Do not work out the day of your appointment.
• You should not take (unless prescribed by a Doctor) any medications that may thin your blood (i.e. Aspirin, Ibuprofen, fish oil, Vitamin E) 48 hours before or immediately after your procedure.
• Do not drink alcohol within 24 hours of your procedure.
• Avoid caffeine for 12 hours before your procedure.
DO I NEED A TOUCH-UP/FOLLOW-UP APPOINTMENT?
100% Yes! All Semi-Permanent Cosmetic procedures require and include 2 sessions, an initial session to establish shape and a perfecting session 5-8 weeks later. During your 5-8 week follow-up we can assess your pigment retention and make any adjustments needed.
This follow-up also increases the longevity of your Semi-Permanent Cosmetics.
DO I NEED A CONSULTATION BEFORE GETTING SEMI-PERMANENT COSMETICS?
I do offer consult appointments on location for a $50 fee. This fee will be deducted from your procedure if you choose to go forward with the procedure. I also do phone consult free of charge if you choose to have one after booking but before your scheduled appointment. However, I book enough time to discuss your needs and wants at the initial appointment. Correction work needs to be discussed before booking so please contact me first if you have had previous PMU work. This way we can schedule adequate time.
HOW LONG DOES THE PROCEDURE TAKE?
Initial appointments take approximately 2 hours. This includes the designing process, numbing the area, and the microblading procedure. Follow-up sessions and Combo Brow times can vary so please contact me for further information on those procedures
I HAVE HAD MY BROWS TATTOOED BEFORE, CAN YOU TOUCH THEM UP?
I require that anyone who has had their brows tattooed previously by another artist text me a picture before booking an appointment. This way we can discuss price, your options and schedule sufficient time.
HOW CAN I BOOK AN APPOINTMENT?
Appointments can be made by clicking the ‘BOOK’ button and you can book directly online.
A $50 deposit is required to ensure you are serious about receiving your Brows. Your deposit will go towards the final price of your brows. The remainder of your balance is due at the time of your appointment.
WHAT IS YOUR CANCELLATION POLICY?
Deposits are fully refundable as long as you give 72 hours’ notice. I also require 72 hours’ notice to make any changes to your appointment. Giving less than 72 hours’ notice for a cancellation will result in the forfeit of your deposit. If you cancel, are more than 15 minutes late, or do not show up to your appointment, your deposit will be forfeited. This may seem strict but it is to insure you are serious about your appointment and should you cancel it gives me time to fill your spot.
WHAT IS MICRO-NEEDLING?
Micro-Needling utilize tiny needles to create hundreds of controlled micro-injuries to the skin. The skin’s natural repair process then stimulates production of new collagen and elastin, which results in the reduction of wrinkles and scars and improves skin texture. Micro-Needling also creates superficial micro-channels which allow topical serums to be absorbed more effectively into the skin.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MICRO-NEEDLING?
Micro-Needling treatments reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, acne scars, tone and texture. Patients notice a fresher appearance or glow to the skin from Micro-Needling.
HOW IS THE PROCEDURE DONE?
A sterile cartridge containing needles is attached to the MicroPen. I will apply a thin layer of a topical gel to your skin and select the appropriate pen setting based on your unique needs. Next, in a single motion, the pen will be gently pressed against the skin while simultaneously gliding in one direction until the entire treatment area has been covered. The procedure takes 30 to 45 minutes depending on the area to be treated.
WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE?
The feeling associated with micro-needling is similar to light sandpaper being moved across the skin. While some areas are more sensitive than others, the speed of the reciprocating tip reduces discomfort while the applied hydrating gel also makes the treatment more tolerable. A topical numbing cream can be applied to further reduce discomfort.
WHAT IS THE DOWNTIME?
Immediately after the treatment you will notice a bright redness to the skin. The total healing time depends on the setting used and the number of overlapping passes your provider performs. On average, clients are red up to 2 to 4 days. Many patients heal completely in as little as 24 hours.
WHEN WILL I SEE THE RESULTS?
Patients notice an immediate “glow” to their skin. Visible changes to the skin develop over the course of several days and weeks. Results can continue to improve up to 6 months.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
It is recommended for most patients to receive a series of 2-3 treatments spaced about 4-6 weeks apart. For patients with deep wrinkles, advanced photo-aging, stretch marks or acne scars, it is recommended to receive 6-8 sessions at 4-week intervals. However, you do not need to “take a break” from micro needling. It can be done every 4-6 weeks. I recommend alternating treatments after your initial 6-8 session cycle.
HOW IS MICRONEEDLING DIFFERENT FROM LASERS?
No heat also equals less downtime! Most microneedling patients are red for 24 hours or less. That advantage means you can get the procedure performed on a Friday and be back to normal for work on Monday.
WHAT IS A LASH LIFT?
The lash lift procedure has revolutionized old, inadequate perming techniques. Using silicone pads instead of perm rods, this new technique can lift, straighten or curl, and lengthen your own natural lashes to create a brighter, fuller, wide eyed look. No need for extensions and the associated aftercare, this will last you 6-8 weeks.
HOW DO I NEED TO PREP FOR THE TREATMENT?
Please come in make-up free. If you wear contacts, they must be removed.
CAN A LASH LIFT BE USED TO COMPLIMENT OTHER TREATMENTS?
Yes! A lash Lift is enhanced when you use an eyelash growth product, or a semi-permanent mascara. While your lashes grow longer, our process controls straight or overly curly lashes by giving them a uniform lifted look.
IS A LASH LIFT THE SAME AS AN EYELASH PERM?
No, the Lash lift is a new, improved procedure, overcoming the ‘over curled’ look of its predecessor. Whilst the chemical procedure is identical to a perm, the difference is in the results. By ditching the old-fashioned perm rollers which curled back the lashes to the extent of the ‘dolly look’, the silicone pads used for this new procedure lifts the lash from the root in either a straight or curled, upwards fashion that produces length and a bright-eyed enhanced look.
DOES THE LASH LIFT PROCEDURE HURT?
No, the procedure is totally painless. You will have your eyes closed for the entire treatment and although it may feel a little strange being unable to open your eyes for this time, it offers you a chance to relax during the treatment.
IS THE PROCEDURE SAFE?
Yes. Lashes are lifted onto our specially shaped lifting pads before products are applied.
WILL THE LASH LIFT DAMAGE MY NATURAL LASHES?
No. Your lash procedure will be performed with the utmost care and proper technique. The product never touches the skin during the process. Redness around the eye may occur due to the product removal process (wiping the eyes with cotton rounds) but should disappear within a few minutes after the procedure.
HOW LONG DOES A LASH LIFT TAKE?
An Elleebana lash lift takes approximately 30-45 minutes.
HOW LONG WILL A LASH LIFT LAST?
A Lash Lift can last 6-8 weeks but can vary from person to person. There is no need for any maintenance appointments in between but you will need to have the process repeated every 6-8 weeks to lift the new hair growth. There are some situations that may cause the lift to drop/weaken prematurely such as swimming, use off harsh products or heat. If you find that your lift does not last the full 2 months, you can repeat the treatment after a minimum of 6 weeks of having the initial treatment, but not before.
WILL I HAVE A REACTION TO THE LOTION?
Very few people have a reaction to the lotion but that doesn’t mean you won’t be one of them. What one person reacts to, another is fine with. This is why you can opt to have a patch test 24 hours beforehand. A patch test is quick and simple. It consists of us placing 2 drops of lotions behind the ear for 15 minutes. Wiping it off and waiting to see if any subsequent irritation occurs over the next 24 hours such as redness, itching or inflammation for example.
IF I WEAR CONTACT LENSES, CAN I HAVE THIS PROCEDURE?
Yes. However, we will ask you to remove them temporarily during the treatment.
CAN I WEAR MAKEUP AFTERY LASH LIFT?
Yes but it is advised that you leave your lashes untouched for at least 24 hours after your treatment. You may find that there is no need for mascara anyway, but if you wish to make your lashes even fuller, a non-waterproof mascara is advised as the removal of waterproof mascaras can be harsh on the lashes and weaken the lift.
HOW DO I CLEAN MY EYES?
Gently, using mild products. Always wait 24 hours to do this, straight after the procedure.
CAN I USE AN EYELASH CURLER?
No. There will be no need for an eyelash curler as this treatment gives a much better result than using a curler, but more importantly, using one may weaken and damage your lashes.
Although it is impossible to list every potential risk and complication, the following conditions are recognized as contraindications for the Lash Lift and must be disclosed prior to the treatment:
Recent Eye Surgery
Allergy to product
Very sensitive eyes
Hay fever sufferers/Watery Eyes
Dry Eye Syndrome
Using prescribed medicated eye drops
Pregnancy – during the 1st trimester
Medication – Thyroxin (in some cases can prevent lashes from curling)
Contact Lenses – must be removed
Post Care Instructions:
Keep your lashes dry and free of makeup for 24 hours after the treatment.
Avoid any oil based creams and lotions for the first 24 hours after the treatment.
Do not use waterproof mascara.
Do not irritate or rub your eyes while you have a Lash Lift
WHAT IS DERMAPLANING?
Dermaplaning is a treatment that uses a medical scalpel to gently exfoliate the outer layer of dead skin cells and remove fine facial hair commonly known as “peach fuzz”, technically called “vellus” hair. it can be used as an alternative to laser treatments and microdermabrasion or along with them for an enhanced result. This procedure will give your skin a more radiant appearance. Following the treatment, makeup application is smoother and other skincare products are able to penetrate deeper in turn making them more effective.
AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE?
The ideal candidate for Dermaplaning has aging, dry, rough, or uneven skin tone. Dermaplaning can also help reduce the appearance of shallow acne scars, fine lines and superficial hyperpigmentation. Dermaplaning is recommended for all skin types except those with active breakout and men with heavy facial hair. If you have active acne there are other treatments available that would be more beneficial, and it is necessary to wait until breakouts are healed before trying this treatment. As always, also discuss any allergies or skin sensitivities before starting a treatment. This is a great treatment if you are pregnant or nursing and want exfoliation without the use of chemicals.
IS THE TREATMENT SAFE?
This treatment is extremely safe when performed by a properly trained skincare professional. There is no more risk to the skin than when you shave your legs. There is also no downtime associated with this procedure.
DOES IT HURT? WILL IT CAUSE CUTS?
Dermaplaning is effective by performing a gentle scraping motion across the skin’s surface. With hair removal such as waxing and threading, most people have the idea that all hair removal is painful, but Dermaplaning is entirely painless. There are risks of cuts on the skin, however they are small and very minor as the pressure used for Dermaplaning cannot cause a deep cut. These nicks and scrapes heal within 24-48 hours.
WILL IT MAKE THE HAIR ON MY FACE GROW BACK THICKER OR DARKER?
No. There are different types of hair that grow on the body; vellus hair and terminal hair. Vellus hair is found on most areas of the body except palms, soles, lips and genital areas, whereas terminal hairs are found on the scalp, underarms and pubic region. The soft and fine vellus hair grows back at the same rate and texture.
WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF ADDING A CHEMICAL PEEL WITH DERMAPLANING?
Hyperkeratosis is a buildup of dead skin cells on the skin’s surface. By removing this initial layer, a chemical peel is able to penetrate deeper into the dermis resulting in a more effective treatment. The conjunction of dermaplaning and a chemical peel leaves the skin refreshed and rejuvenated. Together they promote new skin growth and target problems such as aging, sun spots and environmental damage.
HOW LONG IS THE TREATMENT? HOW OFTEN CAN I HAVE IT DONE?
Dermaplaning takes anywhere between 30-45 minutes and can be performed every 3-4 weeks. The treatment itself removes approximately 21 day’s worth of dead skin so it is important to let your skin rejuvenate before your next appointment.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DERMAPLANING AND MICRODERMABRASION?
Both options are a form of physical exfoliation. Dermaplaning removes vellus hair (peach fuzz) and dead skin cells from the skin, microdermabrasion also exfoliate the surface of the skin, but not as thoroughly or deeply as dermaplaning does.
HOW IS A DERMAPLANING DIFFERENT FROM A PEEL?
Dermaplaning is a manual exfoliation process that does not use acids or enzymes to remove dead skin cells. All of the exfoliation is achieved during your treatment and you will not peel or visibly shed skin after your service, while Peels can result in dramatic peeling in the days following a service. Dermaplaning provides a good alternative to peels for those who desire professional grade exfoliation without the potential social downtime.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING MY SERVICE?
Dermaplaning is a painless treatment that includes deep cleansing, professional exfoliation in the form of dermaplaning followed by restorative treatment and finished with skin care suited to your unique skin. Dermaplaning has a similar sensation to close a shave which removes vellus hair and dead skin cells simultaneously.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AFTER MY SERVICE?
You’ll immediately look more radiant with a more even skin tone and texture. While the main objective of this treatment is exfoliation, the immediate removal of peach fuzz is an added benefit which renders the skin exceptionally smooth and soft. Skin care products are better able to penetrate the skin following a dermaplaning service which allows them to work more efficiently. Your cosmetics will also go on smoother. After the treatment, your skin will be highly sensitive to sun exposure and may look pink, so be sure to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation.
HOW SHOULD I CARE FOR MY SKIN AFTER A DERMAPLANING SERVICE?
After a Dermaplaning treatment your skin needs time to heal and restore. Treat the skin gently, using only hands to cleanse for at least 2 days and wearing sunscreen every day.
